This is Rocky the Rescue Robot’s third appearance at CCMEC.  He’s a member of Vale Thompson’s mine rescue team and is always a favourite at our event. We caught up with Rocky while he was strutting his stuff at the provincial mine rescue competition in Snow Lake this year.

Q: First thing – do you replace humans?

Rocky: Absolutely not. Humans are brave, clever, and surprisingly good at climbing over debris. I’m here to go where it’s too dangerous, too unstable, or too toxic for them. Think of me as the teammate who volunteers to check the scary tunnel first.

Q: What exactly do you do in an emergency?

Rocky: I can enter hazardous areas, carry cameras and sensors, map damaged spaces, detect gases, and send real-time information back to rescue teams. Basically, I’m the robot equivalent of “I’ll go look, but I’m bringing every flashlight imaginable.”

Q: What kind of dangers can you handle?

Rocky: Smoke, unstable ground, flooded passages, low visibility, heat, toxic gases — all the things humans wisely try to avoid. I’m built for rough environments. Dirt and chaos are my kind of jam.

Q: What’s the most important thing you provide during a rescue?

Rocky: Information. Rescue teams make better decisions when they know what’s ahead. I can give them live video, environmental readings, and route data before anyone has to step into danger.

Q: Be honest — how often do people try to race you underground?

Rocky: More often than management would probably like to hear;)

Q: What’s your favourite colour?

Rocky: Yellow of course

Q: Who’s your celebrity crush: R2-D2 or WALL-E

Rocky: That’s no contest – R2-D2 all the way!

Winnipeg – CCMEC is pleased to announce a number of significant partnerships for this year, including Hudbay Minerals as the inaugural supporter of the convention’s newly created, top-tier sponsorship level Au79Rush.

This contribution reflects Hudbay’s support for CCMEC as an essential gathering place for central Canada’s mining and mineral exploration sectors. By stepping up as the first to support this top tier, Hudbay joins a dedicated group of industry leaders supporting the convention, which also includes long-time supporters Vale in the newly created Cobalt level and Rodren Drilling at the Gold level.

“Hudbay is proud to be the top sponsor of CCMEC this year,” said Ashton Crone, Director of Health, Safety and Strategic Deployment at Hudbay.”With all the new exploration and activity in critical minerals right now, it’s an important time to keep driving that momentum forward. For us, this convention is always an excellent opportunity to connect with communities, local partners and strengthen our regional network.”

Named Au79Rush, a nod to gold’s atomic number and representing the highest standard of industry partnership, this custom level honours Hudbay’s nearly century-long mining heritage and deep commitment to the region.

“For CCMEC, Hudbay’s unprecedented sponsorship is more than a financial commitment,” shared Richard Trudeau, Convention Chair. “It is a vote of confidence in the convention’s growing influence and its role in bringing together industry leaders, Indigenous partners, governments, educators, suppliers and innovators to advance the future of mining and energy.”

With registration and trade show spaces filling up quickly (booths are 70% sold), CCMEC continues to offer various sponsorship opportunities to help companies position themselves at the forefront of the industry. This is MAMI’s third year managing the convention, with record setting numbers for 2025 – more than 1,000 participants – and momentum is building for 2026.
